In recent decades, clinical trials involving human subjects have become increasingly globalized as scientists and medical professionals conduct research in
developing countries.
Some of this research seeks to study specific diseases that
are rare in the United States, such as malaria, dengue fever and tuberculosis.

These studies can help address the lack of treatment options “available for the
diseases that have the greatest impact in the developing world.”
Other research
may be motivated by the opportunity to secure U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) approval of a pharmaceutical product, biological product, or medical device.
